Emmy nominations 2022: 'Succession' wins most gestures; Squid leaves a mark on the world
"Succession," HBO's gripping drama about a wealthy and deeply dysfunctional family that runs a media empire, garnered the most nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards Tuesday morning, with a total of 25 nominations.
The series has earned nominations for Best Drama as well as a slew of acting nominations for nearly all of its main cast, including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Nicholas Brown, Matthew Macfadyen, Sarah Snook, and J Smith-Cameron.
And behind it, 20 nominations was "Ted Lasso," the Apple TV Plus comedy starring Jason Sudeikis as the serious American coach of the English Premier League soccer team, as well as The White Lotus, the hit HBO hit limited series that centered on a miserable group. The rich are on vacation at a luxury resort in Hawaii.
As usual, HBO (and HBO Max) continued to dominate, with a total of 140 nominations, including the Comedy Awards "Hacks" and Teen Nightmare "Ecstasy" with 17 and 16 nods, respectively. But in Hulu's win, the streaming service's mystery-comedy "Only Murders in the Building" garnered 17 nominations, with acting names for Steve Martin and Martin Short, though Academy Television curiously rejected co-leader Selena Gomez.
Netflix, of course, had a huge presence among the nominees, with 105 nominations, including History Maker: "Squid Game," the popular Korean series about debt-burdened people who sign up to compete in deadly games for money, is now the first language show He changed English to compete in the Best Drama category, along with "Success", "Ecstasy", "Better Call Saul", "Ozark", "Severance", "Stranger Things" and "Yellowjackets".
And while the network's shows are increasingly curtailing the Emmys, the much-loved ABC song "Abbott Elementary," set in a cash-strapped public school in Philadelphia, earned seven nominations, including acting nominations for Janelle James and Sheryl Lee. Ralph, Tyler James Williams, creator, and star Quinta Bronson.

- "Severance" (Apple TV Plus)
- "Squid Game" (Netflix)
- "Stranger Things" (Netflix)
- "Caliphate" (HBO)
- "Yellowjackets" (Showtime)
- "Ecstasy" (HBO)
Analysis: "Squid Game," Netflix's Korean-language goliath, is impacting the world forever here, yet it has confronted tough opposition in the class from leaving Academy's top choices ("Better Call Saul" and "Ozark") and rookies (“Yellowjackets” and “Severance”) Both. HBO's song "Euphoria" is a pleasant surprise, but only somewhat considering Zendaya's big win at the 2020 gala. Note the lack of network programming—apparently, there was no love for "This Is Us" in his last season.
2- Comedy series
- "Barry" (HBO)
- Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
- "Hacks" (HBO Max)
- "The Marvelous Mrs.Masel" (Amazon Prime)
- "Homicides in the building only" (Hulu)
- "Ted Lasso" (Apple TV Plus)
- "What do we do in the shadows" (FX)
Analysis: Fans of the newcomers Abbott Elementary and Murder in the Building Only will be delighted to see the critically acclaimed shows appear in this category alongside a slew of returning nominees. The other series has a good chance of taking the Emmy home — "Hacks, for example, ran a successful sophomore season — but if the academy works to the beat
3- Limited Series
- "Dopesick" (Hulu)
- "The Dropout" (Hulu)
- "The White Lotus" (HBO)
- "Inventing Anna" (Netflix)
- "Pam and Tommy" (Hulu)
Analysis: Well, hello Hulu. Academy voters clearly loved "Dopesick," the comprehensive (and utterly heartbreaking) broadcast series about the opioid epidemic. They also showed their love for "The Dropout," which follows the rise and fall of Theranos (and the vocal cords of Amanda Seyfried). "Inventing Anna" and "Pam & Tommy" are the two joker cards here. But HBO's The White Lotus might be enough of witnessing love-hate characters to conquer them all. We were a bit surprised not to see "The Staircase," which earned best acting nods, or the well-rated "Maid," which earned Margaret Qualley as the main actress nominee, in the mix.
4- Diverse discussion series
- "The Daily Show With Trevor Noah" (Comedy Central)
- Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC)
- "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver" (HBO)
- "Late Night With Seth Meyers" (NBC)
- "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" (CBS)
Analysis: It looks like Emmy voters have finally decided to take a closer look at Myers' insightful late-night show, which earned the first nod in this category. Oliver is the one who has bested "Last Week Tonight" taking the trophy annually since, oh, 2016.
