The Toyota Corolla Cross is a new compact crossover SUV that debuted in 2020 and is expected to arrive in the US market in 2023. It is based on the popular Corolla sedan, but offers more space, versatility and style. In this review, I will cover the main features, specifications and performance of the Corolla Cross 2023 model.
The Corolla Cross has a sleek and sporty design that resembles a smaller version of the RAV4. It has a bold front grille, LED headlights and taillights, roof rails and 17-inch alloy wheels. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with ample headroom and legroom for five passengers. The cargo area is also generous, with 25.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 60.8 cubic feet with them folded down. The Corolla Cross comes with a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims offer features such as a 9-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad, a power moonroof and a JBL premium sound system.
The Corolla Cross is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that simulates 10-speed shifts for a smoother driving experience. The Corolla Cross offers both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options, with the latter featuring a dynamic torque control system that can distribute up to 50% of the torque to the rear wheels when needed. The Corolla Cross also has three driving modes: Normal, Eco and Sport, that adjust the throttle response, steering feel and transmission behavior according to the driver's preference. The fuel economy ratings for the Corolla Cross are not yet available, but they are expected to be similar to the Corolla sedan, which gets 31 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.
The Corolla Cross is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assist features that are part of the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 package. These include pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams and blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. The Corolla Cross also has a standard rearview camera and available features such as front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic braking and a surround-view monitor.
The Corolla Cross is expected to compete with other compact crossovers such as the Honda HR-V, the Hyundai Kona and the Subaru Crosstrek. It offers a balance of practicality, performance and style that appeals to a wide range of buyers. The pricing for the Corolla Cross has not been announced yet, but it is likely to start around $20,000 for the base model and go up to $30,000 for the top-of-the-line model.
