Noah Lyles enters the history books with a world 200m gold in 19.31 seconds

Noah Lyles put in a dominant performance to retain his 200-meter title in 19.31 seconds at the world championships on Thursday, becoming the third fastest athlete ever over the distance and leading the second American race on the podium.

Lyles, who won the Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo, advanced halfway and burst to the finish, as his compatriots Kenny Bednarik (19.77) and 18-year-old Erion Knighton (19.80) fought off the turn and descent respectively for the silver and bronze medals.

Lyles was not satisfied with the speed with which he got out of the blocks in some of his races but said that the first few meters were "the beginning of my life".

"I was telling [Knighton] and Kenny,' I was glad you're all behind me because you're putting the fear of God first, ' "Lyles said.

Lyles tore his shirt off after the finale while the home crowd in Eugene, Oregon, roared with approval, and offered to embrace his rival, Knighton.

"Today is my day – I finally got what I dreamed of," he said after breaking the US national record of four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson, which has been standing since 1996. "I've got my whole family here.”

Lyles ' time was initially displayed as 19.32, which would have tied Johnson's record. However, it was then updated to 19.31 officially when he turned his back, as the 25-year-old was surprised when he noticed the new number on the clock. Johnson later approached him to congratulate him on breaking the mark.

"I didn't know that Irion took third place until we got on the podium," Lyles said.

Thursday's race was the second 1-2-3 for the American men in Eugene after Fred Curley, Marvin Bracey, and Trayvon Brummel swept the 100-meter race. This is the first time any country has swept the two men's races in the same year in the world.

It capped a remarkable turnaround from the Tokyo Olympics a year earlier when the American men left without any individual gold medals.

Lyles said he had also changed, relearning how to love the sport after passing through Tokyo with a" big target " on his back.

"Every time I got on the track this year – I knew I wasn't the same person anymore," he said. "It was like I found my groove, I was enjoying the track again. I was happy every day just to run.”
