The gray guy takes the stoic-spy cliche way too far Much like Brad Pitt before him, Ryan Gosling continues to fall for the "cool guy" trap in Hollywood.
Stoicism has always been a powerful weapon in Ryan Gosling's cinematic Arsenal. One of his best-remembered films is still the taut thriller of 2011, where he played an unnamed stunt driver who is relaxed behind the wheel but monosyllabic in conversation.
As a K-officer in Blade Runner 2049, he was a robot, an artificial "repeater" designed to be devoid of emotion. In the first man, astronaut Neil Armstrong is portrayed as prickly and reserved, more willing to confront his work than any personal relationship.
But far, as he looked in each of those movies, he was always wrestling with a complicated character, the right story stakes, and a touch of inner weirdness. His latest leading role, in the Netflix action blockbuster The Grey Man, is none of that.
Again, Gosling plays a man without a name, this time a killer who goes through the "Sierra six" and carries out CIA black operations with ruthless efficiency.
The Gray Man, based on the best-selling 2009 novel and directed by the Russo Brothers, arrives on Netflix (and in limited theaters) with a lot of pedigree:
The brothers directed four Marvel films that are among the most successful ever. They have assembled a star-studded cast around Gosling that includes Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, and Reg Jean-Jean Page, and Alfre Woodard.
But the gray man is a completely anonymous viewing experience, a series of static pieces and eloquent jokes devoid of character. And personality is what really helps Gosling pop on the screen.
