Dubbed the pioneer of electronic music, Sala has reportedly been surrounded by music since she was born with a mother who was a singer and a father who, despite being an ophthalmologist, also had musical talent.

Sala became famous for developing and perfecting the tautonym mix in 1936, which gave a unique sound to films, television, and radio.

This was only a year after he studied physics at the University of Berlin in 1935. By creating this musical instrument, Sala "electrified the world of television, radio, and cinema," according to the Google Doodle page.

Even at the age of 14, Sala cemented his reputation as a musical genius as he began composing songs via instruments such as piano and violin.

Why is Oscar Sala famous?

After inventing the tautonym mix, Sala composed sound effects and musical compositions for a wide range of productions that brought him to fame.

This included famous films

  •  as birds (1963)
  •  Rosemary (1959)

Due to the variety of his instruments, which can produce sounds just like closing doors or chirping birds, Sala received many awards for his talents including the Cross of merit.

In 1995, it was reported that Sala donated his original mix-tautonym to the German Museum of contemporary technology and built other instruments including concert tautonym, folkstratonium, and Quartette trautonium.

"His efforts in electronic music opened up the field of sub-harmonics. With his dedication and creative energy, he became a one-man orchestra," the Google Doodle page said.

What is a mixture-trautonium?

Trautonium is an electronic compound invented by Friedrich Trautwein in Berlin, in 1930.

It is triggered by moving a finger along a resistive wire that connects to a rail under it, producing a sound.

This was later developed into the' tautonym mixture ' by the talented tautonym virtuoso himself, Oscar Sala, in 1936.

Sala added an electronic rhythm to his improved design, along with other components such as noise generators and an electric accelerator.

In the end, he strengthened the instrument so much that it could simulate a fully electronic orchestra, which was a great achievement at the time of its creation.

When did Oscar Sala die?

Oscar Sala died on February 26, 2002, at the age of 91.

The exact cause of his death is not fully understood but it is suspected that it was simply due to old age.
